What Is Journalism?






When you reading, hearing, or watching a news or article, which is in magazine, newspaper, radio, or television have you thinking about what is journalism? Have you had a question how a journalist can make a news? And even you interested to be a journalist?
If you like reading, hearing, or watching a news or article you must know what is journalism to appreciate them who had make the news.

Journalism is a daily notes or some notes about daily events, also can have the meaning as a newspaper. Base on Indonesia Dictionary (KBBI) journalism is a job collecting and writing news in print media or electronic media.

You can see journalism in some functions, they are:
(a)    As process
Journalism is an “activity” to searching, processing, writing, and disseminating information to public through the mass media. This activity is doing by a journalist.
(b)   As technique
Journalism is an “expertise” or “skill” writing about journalism creation (news, article, and feature) includes skill in collecting the material of writing as event coverage (reportase) and interview.
(c)    As science
Journalism is a “field of study” about how to make and publish information (event, opinion, thought, idea) through mass media.

Journalism is always evolving in accordance with the development of information and communication technology and the change of society itself. Its main activity or journalistic process is generating news. There are several kinds of news which are produced by a journalist such as:
-          Straight news/ hard news/ spot news
-          Opinion news
-          Investigative news
-          Soft news

In order to make news, you as a journalist have to pass some steps until you can produce news. The steps are:
1)      Hunting
Collecting the fact and data of event which is has a news value—factual, factual, important, and interesting—by filling out six elements of news (5W + 1H)
·         What/ what happened?
·         Who/ who was involved in the incident?
·         Where/ where it happened?
·         When/ when it happened?
·         Why/ why it happened?
·         How/ how the process happened?
2)      Writing
Fact and data which had collected, then it is written down based on 5W + 1H formula by using journalistic language—specific (short sentence, raw, simple) and communicative (clear, straight to the point) easy to understanding by common people.
3)      The structure of the text
The composition of the news texts consists of:
Head (title)
Lead (terrace) or the first paragraph which is containing the most important or the most interesting thing.
Body (content) is in the form of explanations description which had stated in Lead.

So, Journalism is an interesting profession or activity. It’s also easy enough to write a news right? After knowing what is journalism and how to write news, do you interested in being a journalist?
